Dentures

Dentures | Blue Bell | Ambler | GwyneddDentures are prosthetic devices designed to help patients with missing teeth perform daily activities that would otherwise be difficult. Patients who have lost their natural teeth due to decay, periodontal disease or injury may suffer from further decay, as well as difficulty eating and speaking. The absence of teeth can also lead to a sunken, collapsed appearance in the mouth area. By restoring the physical presence of teeth, this malformation is corrected and the patient can maintain their normal appearance.

There are three types of dentures: full (complete) dentures, fixed partial dentures and removable partial dentures. Most patients only require partial dentures, as they are only missing a few teeth. Additionally, most partial dentures are fixed in place by the crown-and-bridge technique, and those who possess removable partial dentures are usually exempt from the fixed version due to complicating factors.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants | Blue Bell | Ambler | GwyneddTooth loss is a common condition that can occur as a result of disease, trauma or poor dental hygiene. The best treatment for tooth loss is to replace the missing tooth, which can help prevent gum damage and tooth damage, as well as restore comfort and confidence in social situations. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root used to support tooth replacement structures such as crowns, bridges and dentures. Dental implants help patients regain the ability to eat, speak, and smile without the pain and embarrassment of missing teeth.

Dental implants are titanium cylinders that are surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace the roots of the missing tooth. The replacement structure is supported by the implant, and looks and feels like a natural tooth. Implants offer permanent results and full functionality, which can result in people not knowing that you lost teeth in the first place.

Dental implants are placed during a series of appointments over several months. During the first procedure, the titanium anchors are placed in the jaw. Over the next three to six months, the anchors heal and fuse to the bone, a period known as osseointegration. Small posts are attached to the implant to help provide stability for the replacement tooth. After the anchors heal, the patient is fitted for replacements, which can be installed during the next appointment. Implant surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia.

A crown can be used to replace one tooth, a bridge can replace several teeth, and a full bridge or full denture can replace all teeth. The replacement teeth can be treated just like natural teeth, requiring regular home care and dental visits.

TMJ Treatment

TMJ Treatment | Blue Bell | Ambler | GwyneddThe Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the small joint located in front of your ear where your skull and your lower jaw meet. The TMJ moves every time you talk, yawn, chew or swallow. It is one of the most frequently used joints in your body.

This joint may be affected by injury or disease and can lead to symptoms such as headache, facial pain, earache, limited mouth opening and an abnormal bite, a condition known as TMJ disorder. Symptoms can vary from mildly noticeable to seriously debilitating pain.

Treatment of your temporomandibular joint disorder may range from conservative dental and medical care to complex surgery. Your treatment may include short-term care such as pain medication, muscle relaxation, bite plate or splint therapy and, at times, stress reduction counseling.

If non-surgical treatment is unsuccessful or if there is joint damage, surgery may be indicated. Surgery can involve from the least invasive, arthrocentesis, to arthroscopy or open joint surgery.

Nonsurgical Gum Treatments

Nonsurgical Gum Treatments | Blue Bell | Ambler | GwyneddPeriodontal or gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a leading cause of tooth loss in American adults and most often caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth. In the early stage of gum disease, a condition known as gingivitis, gums may become red and swollen and bleed easily; in the more advanced stage (periodontal disease), teeth can loosen and even fall out.

Treatment for periodontal disease usually focuses on removing the plaque buildup in the teeth to restore your mouth to its previous healthy state. For early, mild cases of periodontal disease, your doctor may recommend a deep cleaning, performed as a scaling or root planning. Laser gum treatment is also available, as a noninvasive, painless procedure that can be used to repair deep gum pockets, sore gums and tooth damage, and improve a gummy smile.
